Last updated: October 2026. Written by the Examinotion team and fact-checked against the official Microsoft Learn certification pages, exam pages and study guides.
TL;DR AB-620 is the hands-on builder certification: it tests whether you can plan, integrate, test and manage agents in Copilot Studio. AB-100 is the expert architect certification: it tests whether you can plan, design and deploy agentic business solutions across Microsoft's stack. AB-620 also counts towards the AB-100 prerequisite, so most people should take AB-620 first.
If you are choosing between AB-100 (Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect) and AB-620 (Designing and Building Integrated AI Solutions in Copilot Studio), which earns the AI Agent Builder Associate certification, you are comparing two levels of the same career track. Both exams are about AI agents and both need a score of 700 to pass. They test different jobs, though, and they sit at different levels. This guide compares them domain by domain, explains how the AB-100 prerequisite works, and recommends which to take first for your role.
AB-100 vs AB-620 at a glance
AB-620 asks whether you can build an enterprise agent in Copilot Studio, while AB-100 asks whether you can decide what an organisation should build, on which platform, and how to run it safely. AB-620 is an Intermediate, associate-level certification for developers and advanced builders [4]. AB-100 is an expert-level certification for solution architects [1].

A note on AB-100 exam length: as of 16 October 2026, Microsoft's AB-100 pages do not state a duration. Microsoft's general guidance is that associate and expert role-based exams without labs last 100 minutes, and those that may contain labs last 120 minutes [6]. Check the time shown when you book.
What AB-620 tests: building agents in Copilot Studio
AB-620 is a builder's exam. Microsoft describes the candidate as "a professional developer or advanced builder who builds, extends, and integrates custom agents for enterprise-grade solutions" [4]. It also expects "intermediate knowledge of generative AI concepts, including models, orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), Model Context Protocol (MCP), Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol, and more" [4].
The AB-620 skills outline has three domains [5]:
| AB-620 domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Plan and configure agent solutions | 30-35% |
| Integrate and extend agents in Copilot Studio | 40-45% |
| Test and manage agents | 20-25% |
The biggest domain, integrate and extend, is where most candidates are tested hardest. It covers knowledge sources such as Copilot connectors, Power Platform connectors and Azure AI Search, tools such as MCP servers, custom connectors, REST APIs and computer use, and multi-agent designs that connect Foundry agents, Fabric data agents and other Copilot Studio agents [5]. The planning domain covers integration with enterprise systems, agent identity, channels, responsible AI and governance. The testing domain covers test sets, evaluation methods and application lifecycle management (ALM) with solutions, environment variables and Power Platform Pipelines [5].
Microsoft also warns that the AB-620 exam "may have interactive components" [4]. That suggests you need real time in Copilot Studio, not just reading. Our multi-agent Copilot Studio tutorial is a good hands-on starting point, and the AB-620 exam guide explains each domain in more depth.
What AB-100 tests: designing and governing agentic business solutions
AB-100 is an architect's exam. Microsoft describes the candidate as "an accomplished solution architect with expertise in designing and delivering AI-driven business solutions that transform business processes and foster innovation" [2]. The job is less about configuring one agent and more about choosing the right mix of agents, platforms and controls for a whole organisation.
The AB-100 skills outline, updated on 14 October 2026, has three domains [3]:
| AB-100 domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Plan AI-powered business solutions | 25-30% |
| Design AI-powered business solutions | 25-30% |
| Deploy AI-powered business solutions | 40-45% |
The three domains reach well beyond Copilot Studio [3]:
- Plan: assessing where agents add value, checking grounding-data readiness, adoption planning, multi-agent strategy, deciding when to extend Microsoft 365 Copilot or build custom agents, build, buy or extend decisions, and return-on-investment (ROI) analysis.
- Design: designing task, autonomous and prompt-and-response agents, extensibility through Copilot Studio, Model Context Protocol (MCP), computer use and custom Foundry models, and orchestrating AI features in prebuilt Dynamics 365, Microsoft 365 and Power Platform apps.
- Deploy: the largest domain, covering monitoring and tuning, testing, ALM across Copilot Studio, Foundry and Dynamics 365, agent security, governance, responsible AI reviews, data residency and audit trails.
The English version of AB-100 was updated on 14 October 2026, and Microsoft's change log lists the changes as minor [2] [3]. If you started studying before that date, re-read the current study guide before you book. Our AB-100 study guide maps each domain to what you need to know, and how to pass AB-100 covers exam strategy.
How the AB-100 prerequisite works, and why AB-620 counts
The AB-100 certification is only awarded to candidates who also hold a qualifying associate-level certification, and AB-620's AI Agent Builder Associate is one of them. Microsoft's wording is: "In addition to passing the AB-100 required exam, you must also earn at least one of the prerequisite Associate-level certifications listed below" [1].
The qualifying list includes the AI Agent Builder Associate (AB-620), the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate (AI-103), the Intelligent Applications Builder Associate (AB-410) and a range of Power Platform and Dynamics 365 associate certifications [1] [2]. The exact count differs slightly between Microsoft's AB-100 certification page and its exam page, so check the current list on both before you plan around a specific certification. AB-730 and AB-731 are not on either list.
Microsoft's wording ties the prerequisite to earning the certification [1], and its pages do not say whether it affects booking the exam. Either way, passing AB-100 without a qualifying associate certification does not earn you the AB-100 credential. That is why taking AB-620 first is the most efficient route for most Copilot Studio professionals: one exam gives you an associate certification and the prerequisite at the same time. Our AB-100 prerequisites guide explains every qualifying route in detail.
Where AB-100 and AB-620 overlap, and where they do not
AB-100 and AB-620 share a vocabulary of agents, knowledge, tools, testing and ALM, but they ask different questions about it. AB-620 asks "how do I configure this?" AB-100 asks "should we build this at all, where, and how will we govern it?"
| Topic | AB-620 angle | AB-100 angle |
|---|---|---|
| Copilot Studio | Build topics, flows, knowledge and tools | Decide when Copilot Studio is the right platform |
| Multi-agent design | Connect existing, Foundry and Fabric agents | Choose the overall agent architecture across products |
| Microsoft Foundry | Integrate a Foundry agent into Copilot Studio | Decide between Copilot Studio, Foundry and custom models |
| Dynamics 365 | Not a focus | Design AI features across Dynamics 365 apps |
| Testing | Create test sets and review results | Define the test process, metrics and end-to-end testing |
| ALM | Solutions, environment variables, Pipelines | ALM across Copilot Studio, Foundry, Dynamics 365 and data |
| Governance and security | Plan agent identity and governance | Own security, governance, responsible AI and audit across the estate |
| Business case | Not a focus | ROI, total cost of ownership and adoption planning |
Sources for the table: the AB-620 and AB-100 study guides [5] [3].
The overlap is real but uneven. Much of what AB-620 covers about Copilot Studio knowledge, tools and ALM reappears in AB-100 at a higher level. AB-100 then adds Dynamics 365, Foundry custom models, business cases and enterprise governance, which AB-620 does not test. That makes AB-620 good preparation for AB-100, but not enough on its own.
Difficulty: is AB-100 harder than AB-620?
AB-100 is the harder exam for most candidates, because it is expert level and spans more products, but AB-620 is not an easy warm-up. Both need 700 out of 1000 to pass [2] [5].
AB-620 is hard in a hands-on way. Its largest domain is detailed configuration: which knowledge source suits a scenario, how an MCP tool or custom connector behaves, and how existing, Foundry and Fabric data agents are integrated. In our experience, hands-on practice matters more than reading for that level of detail.
AB-100 is hard in a judgement way. Its skills outline asks you to decide when to build, buy or extend, how to govern agents, and how to validate data residency, so expect to weigh cost, governance and adoption trade-offs [3]. Breadth is the real challenge: you need working knowledge of Copilot Studio, Foundry, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Power Platform and Dynamics 365 AI features.
Microsoft's general policy allows access to Microsoft Learn during associate and expert role-based exams, the levels these two certifications sit at, though neither exam page confirms it specifically. Where available, access is limited to the learn.microsoft.com domain (excluding Q&A and Practice Assessments), and the timer keeps running [6]. It helps for checking a detail, not for learning a topic mid-exam. Our guide to using Microsoft Learn during your exam explains how to use it without losing time.
Preparation time and official training
Microsoft offers a three-day instructor-led course for each exam: AB-620T00 (Design and build integrated AI agent solutions in Copilot Studio) [10] and AB-100T00 (Architecting agentic AI business solutions) [9]. Both also have a free Microsoft Practice Assessment [3] [5].
As a planning guide, based on Examinotion's experience rather than Microsoft figures:
| Your starting point | AB-620 | AB-100 |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Copilot Studio builder | 3-5 weeks | 6-8 weeks after AB-620 |
| Power Platform or Dynamics 365 consultant, little Copilot Studio | 5-7 weeks | 6-10 weeks after AB-620 |
| Solution architect with agent projects already delivered | 2-4 weeks | 4-6 weeks |
Whichever exam you choose, build your plan around the official skills outline and its weightings. Our AB-100 30-day study plan gives a week-by-week schedule, and how to pass AB-620 covers exam tactics for the builder exam.
If you fail either exam, Microsoft's retake policy requires a 24-hour wait before the second attempt and 14 days between later attempts, up to five attempts in 12 months [7]. Our retake policy guide explains how to plan a second attempt.
Which should you take first? Our recommendation by role
For most people the answer is AB-620 first, then AB-100. AB-620 gives you an associate certification, satisfies the AB-100 prerequisite, and builds the hands-on Copilot Studio knowledge that AB-100 scenarios assume.
- Copilot Studio maker or developer: take AB-620. It matches your day-to-day work. Add AB-100 later if you move into architecture.
- Solution architect with no associate certification: take AB-620 first, because you need a qualifying associate certification for the AB-100 credential anyway.
- Solution architect who already holds AI-103, AB-410 or a qualifying Dynamics 365 or Power Platform associate: you can go straight to AB-100. Check that your certification is still active and on the current list.
- Pro-code Azure developer: consider AI-103 instead of AB-620 as your associate step. It also qualifies for AB-100, as our AI-103 career guide explains.
- Business user or manager rather than a builder: neither exam may be the right first step. Our AB-620 vs AB-730 vs AB-900 comparison covers the business-focused alternatives.
For the full picture of how these certifications fit together, see our Microsoft AI certification roadmap.
Keeping both certifications current
AB-620 and AB-100 both expire annually. Microsoft renews them through a free, unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn, available in a six-month window before expiry [3] [5] [8]. Passing extends the certification by one year from its expiry date [8].
Plan for both renewals if you hold both. Keep your AB-620 active too, because it supports your AB-100 credential. Our Microsoft certification renewal guide walks through the renewal process step by step.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AB-100 and AB-620?
AB-620 is an associate-level exam that tests building agents in Copilot Studio: knowledge, tools, multi-agent integration, testing and ALM. AB-100 is an expert-level architect exam that tests planning, designing and deploying agentic business solutions across Copilot Studio, Microsoft Foundry, Dynamics 365, Microsoft 365 Copilot and Power Platform, including governance and ROI.
Should I take AB-620 before AB-100?
Most candidates should take AB-620 before AB-100. AB-620 earns the AI Agent Builder Associate certification, which is one of the qualifying prerequisites for the AB-100 credential. It also builds the hands-on Copilot Studio knowledge that AB-100 scenario questions assume. Candidates who already hold another qualifying associate certification can go straight to AB-100.
Does AB-620 count as a prerequisite for AB-100?
Yes. Microsoft lists the AI Agent Builder Associate certification, earned by passing AB-620, among the associate-level certifications that qualify for the AB-100 Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect credential. You must hold at least one qualifying associate certification as well as passing AB-100 before Microsoft awards the AB-100 certification.
Is AB-100 harder than AB-620?
AB-100 is harder for most candidates. It is an expert-level exam covering several products, and its skills outline tests architectural judgement on cost, governance and data residency. AB-620 is narrower but detailed, focusing on hands-on Copilot Studio configuration. Both require a score of 700 out of 1000 to pass.
Can I take AB-100 without an associate certification?
Microsoft's wording makes an associate certification a condition of earning the AB-100 credential, and its pages do not say whether you can book the exam without one. Passing AB-100 alone does not earn the credential. The safest plan is to hold a qualifying certification such as AB-620 or AI-103 before or soon after sitting AB-100.
Do AB-100 and AB-620 expire?
Yes, both certifications expire annually. Microsoft lets you renew each one for free by passing an unproctored online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn, which opens six months before the expiry date. Passing the renewal assessment extends the certification by one year from its current expiry date.
Can I use Microsoft Learn during the AB-100 or AB-620 exam?
Microsoft's general policy allows access to Microsoft Learn during associate and expert exams, the levels of AB-620 and AB-100. Confirm on your exam's launch screen that it is available for your sitting. Access is limited to learn.microsoft.com, excluding Q&A and Practice Assessments, and the exam timer keeps running.
Conclusion
AB-620 and AB-100 are two steps on the same agentic AI track. AB-620 proves you can build and integrate agents in Copilot Studio. AB-100 proves you can design, deploy and govern agentic solutions across Microsoft's business platforms. Because AB-620 also satisfies the AB-100 prerequisite, it is the natural first step for most builders and architects.
