TL;DR
AB-730 awards Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional. The 45 minute exam, with a 700/1000 pass mark, covers three domains: generative AI fundamentals, prompt and agent management, and AI-assisted business content. It went GA on 28 January 2026. Domain 2 carries 35 to 40 percent of the marks and decides most outcomes.
What is the AB-730 Exam?
AB-730, full name Exam AB-730: AI Business Professional, is the Microsoft certification for working professionals who use Microsoft 365 Copilot every day to draft documents, manage meetings, run prompts, and build lightweight agents [1]. Pass it and you earn the Microsoft Certified: AI Business Professional credential [2].
It was announced in beta at Microsoft Ignite 2025 in San Francisco and went generally available on 28 January 2026 [12][14]. The exam is rated Beginner level by Microsoft, runs for 45 minutes, and is delivered in English only via Pearson VUE either online proctored or at a test centre [1].
Examinotion recommends AB-730 to readers who fit at least one of these profiles:
- A business analyst, consultant, project manager, or operations specialist who has Microsoft 365 Copilot rolled out at work and wants formal recognition for using it skilfully
- An L&D or change manager rolling Copilot out to a team and needing a credential that signals trustworthy AI guidance
- A graduate or career switcher entering a UK organisation that has standardised on Microsoft 365 and wants a low-friction first AI certification
If you are after a deeper Azure technical credential instead, see our AI-901 exam guide for Azure AI Fundamentals. If you are unsure whether AB-730 or its sibling AB-731 fits you better, our AB-731 vs AB-730 comparison lays out the differences.
This Certification is designed for business professionals who want to apply AI tools to real business challenges." — Microsoft Tech Community, AI Business Professional announcement, 13 November 2025 [12]
AB-730 Skills Measured: The Three Domains
Microsoft publishes the AB-730 skills outline on its official AB-730 study guide page [2]. The exam covers three domains, weighted as follows:
| Domain | Weight | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Understand generative AI fundamentals | 25 to 30% | How Copilot works, context, agents vs chat, responsible AI, data protection |
| 2. Manage prompts and conversations by using AI | 35 to 40% | Prompt creation, sharing and scheduling, conversation management, building agents |
| 3. Draft and analyse business content by using AI | 25 to 30% | Document drafting, summarisation, meetings, Copilot Pages, memory and instructions |
The weightings matter. Domain 2 is the largest single area of the exam. If you only have time to study one domain in depth, make it Domain 2.
Domain 1: Understand Generative AI Fundamentals (25 to 30%)
Microsoft splits this into two subdomains [2].
Generative AI capabilities across Microsoft 365. You need to explain how Copilot keeps organisational data private, how the context (the file you have open, the app you are in, the documents you reference) shapes the response you get, the difference between a chat experience and an agent experience, when it makes sense to build your own agent, and the differences in features across Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
Responsible AI and data protection. You must recognise common risks including fabrications, prompt injection, and over-reliance, then know how to verify outputs through citation checks and human review. The skills outline calls out that you should be able to mitigate risks to sensitive data and explain how data protection rules restrict prompt results [2].
This is the easiest domain to under-prepare for because the content sounds like marketing material. Take it seriously: the exam tests whether you can pick the correct mitigation for a scenario, not just whether you can describe the concept of responsible AI.
Domain 2: Manage Prompts and Conversations by Using AI (35 to 40%)
This is the heaviest-weighted domain and the one most candidates lose marks on. It splits into three subdomains [2].
Create and manage prompts in Microsoft 365 Copilot. Know how to write an effective prompt, how to attach the right resources (a SharePoint document, a Teams chat, a meeting recording) so Copilot has the context it needs, and how to save, schedule, and share prompts inside the prompt library.
Manage conversations in Copilot. Know how to find a previous conversation, delete a chat, rename a chat, and add a conversation to a notebook. These sound trivial, and they are, but the exam will test the small workflow details you may not have used in practice.
Create and manage Microsoft 365 Copilot agents. Understand when to choose an existing agent from the Agent Store versus creating a new one, how to spin up an agent from a template, how to give an agent knowledge (file sources, websites), how to configure its instructions, capabilities, and suggested prompts, and how to share it with team members. Our Microsoft Copilot agents business guide covers the conceptual model in more depth.
Examinotion's view: if you have not personally built an agent in Copilot Studio or via the Agent Builder inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, set aside an evening to do it before sitting AB-730. Reading about agent configuration is not the same as configuring one.
Domain 3: Draft and Analyse Business Content by Using AI (25 to 30%)
Two subdomains [2].
Draft business documents and communications. Create a new document from a prompt, generate a document from an existing document, generate a management summary from a longer document, and move data and insights between Microsoft 365 apps (think Excel insights pasted into a Word document, or Outlook draft based on a Teams message thread).
Manage meetings and collaboration. Use Copilot for meetings (live transcription, action items, recap), use Copilot Pages for collaboration, and explain how Copilot uses memory and custom instructions to personalise responses over time.
Most questions cover features that are general availability (GA). The exam may contain questions on Preview features if those features are commonly used." — Microsoft Learn, AB-730 study guide, 27 October 2025 [2]
The implication: focus on what is GA across Microsoft 365 Copilot today. Memory and Copilot Pages were both GA at the time the skills outline was published.
How Hard is AB-730? Format, Time and Pass Mark
The AB-730 exam is a 45 minute, 700/1000 scaled-score assessment delivered through Pearson VUE [1][2]. Microsoft does not publish the exact number of questions, only that the seat duration is approximately 65 minutes once you add check-in and the candidate agreement [5].
A score of 700 or greater is required to pass." — Microsoft Learn, AB-730 study guide [2]
The 45 minute window is genuinely tight. Treat it like a fundamentals exam in cadence: roughly 45 to 60 seconds per question. You do not have time to second-guess every answer.
Microsoft publishes no pass rate for any exam, but two signals suggest AB-730 is more demanding than its Beginner label implies:
- The exam includes interactive components such as drag and drop and case-style scenarios [1][5]. Microsoft does not disclose specific question types but confirms candidates "may have interactive components to complete as part of this exam" [1]. These take longer than single-select multiple choice.
- The 80% beta discount that Microsoft offered to the first 300 online candidates in November 2025 [12] suggests Microsoft anticipated a non-trivial study commitment.
In practice, candidates who use Microsoft 365 Copilot daily and study the skills outline carefully report that 25 to 35 hours of focused preparation gets a comfortable first-time pass. Candidates who rely solely on tutorials and skip hands-on practice tend to underestimate Domain 2.
To protect exam security and the value of our certifications, we don't identify specific exam formats or question types before the exam. However, you can demo the role-based and fundamentals exam experience by visiting our 'exam sandbox'." — Microsoft Learn, Exam duration and exam experience, 31 March 2026 [5]
We have a longer breakdown of the most common pitfalls in 10 common AB-730 exam mistakes, including the specific places candidates lose marks in Domain 2.
Recommended Study Timeline: 2-Week, 4-Week and 8-Week Paths
The right plan depends on how much Microsoft 365 Copilot you already use day-to-day. Pick the closest match.
Two-week sprint (you already use Copilot daily)
This works if you are already using Copilot in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams, and you have built or used at least one agent.
| Day | Activity |
|---|---|
| 1-2 | Read the official AB-730 skills outline end to end, then complete the free Transform business workflows with generative AI learning path on Microsoft Learn [3] |
| 3-5 | Build one declarative agent in the Agent Store and one custom agent in Copilot Studio. Share both with a colleague |
| 6-7 | Practise prompt patterns: schedule a prompt, save a prompt to a library, reference a SharePoint document in a prompt |
| 8-10 | Run Examinotion's AB-730 practice questions under timed conditions. Identify your weakest subdomain |
| 11-12 | Re-revise the weak subdomain. Focus on Domain 2 if Domain 2 is your weakness |
| 13 | Complete the official Microsoft Practice Assessment on the AB-730 certification page |
| 14 | Sit the exam |
Four-week plan (the standard route)
This is the plan most candidates should follow. It mirrors the 30 day path in our AB-730 30-day study plan.
- Week 1: Read the skills outline, complete the official learning path, watch the Exam Readiness Zone videos covering AB-730
- Week 2: Hands-on practice across all three domains: build agents, schedule prompts, draft documents from prompts, generate management summaries
- Week 3: Practice questions in 20-question blocks. Work through the most common AB-730 mistakes and run a comparison of practice test providers
- Week 4: Two timed mock exams, the official Microsoft Practice Assessment, then final revision of weak areas. Sit the exam at the end of the week
Eight-week plan (Copilot newcomers)
For candidates who have rarely used Copilot. Add hands-on time and stretch the four-week plan: weeks 1 and 2 are foundations, weeks 3 to 5 are deep-dive on Domain 2, weeks 6 and 7 mirror the four-week practice schedule, week 8 is mock exams and the sitting.
A useful rule: do not book the exam until you score above 75% on three consecutive timed practice runs. The official Microsoft Practice Assessment is a good calibration tool because it uses the same scaled scoring approach as the live exam [10].
Free vs Paid Study Resources for AB-730
Microsoft provides enough free material for a confident first-attempt pass. Paid resources are useful for time-poor candidates who want curation rather than content.
Free resources, all from Microsoft

Paid options
The instructor-led course AB-730T00-A: Transform business workflows with generative AI runs as a one-day, 24-hour intensive through authorised Microsoft Training Partners [4]. Pricing is set by partners and varies by region. It mirrors the free learning path but with a live trainer.
Third-party practice question banks (MeasureUp, Whizlabs, ExamTopics) and Examinotion's own AB-730 practice tests are useful for question density. We compared them in Best AB-730 practice tests compared.
If exam fees are a concern, Microsoft AI certification vouchers and discounts walks through every legitimate UK saving available, including Exam Replay vouchers and corporate licence discounts.
Question Types: What to Expect
Microsoft does not publish the specific question types per exam for security reasons [5]. What it confirms about role-based and fundamentals exams in general is that you may encounter:
- Single-select multiple choice
- Multi-select multiple choice (where you must pick all that apply)
- Yes/No statement scenarios
- Drag and drop ordering
- Build list / sequence
- Hot area
- Active screen interactions
- Case studies (multi-question scenarios)
The 45 minute duration suggests AB-730 leans on quicker question types rather than long case studies, but the certification page explicitly mentions "interactive components" [1]. Expect at least some drag and drop or sequencing.
The official exam sandbox lets you experience the question UI before sitting the exam [1]. Use it. The first time you encounter a drag and drop question should not be on the day.

Top 10 Mistakes That Fail AB-730 Candidates First Time
These are the patterns we see most often in candidate feedback and post-fail debriefs.
- Skipping the official Microsoft Practice Assessment. It is free, mirrors the live exam scoring, and reveals which subdomain you are weakest in. Skip it and you walk in blind.
- Assuming Domain 1 is easy because it sounds conceptual. The "responsible AI" bullets in the skills outline are tested with specific scenarios. You need to choose the right mitigation, not describe the principle.
- Not building an agent before the exam. Reading about agent configuration is not the same as configuring an agent. Domain 2 is 35 to 40% of the exam and agent management is the second-hardest part of it.
- Studying only Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams have different features. The skills outline calls out "differences in features and capabilities of the Copilot experience in various Microsoft 365 apps" [2]. Test all of them.
- Ignoring Copilot Pages and notebooks. Domain 3 references both. Many candidates have never opened either.
- Not practising the small workflow details. Saving a prompt, scheduling a prompt, sharing a prompt, adding a conversation to a notebook, deleting a chat. They sound trivial. The exam will test them anyway.
- Trusting unofficial "dump" sites. They violate the candidate agreement, the content is often wrong, and Microsoft regularly invalidates results from candidates flagged for dump-site activity. Stick to Microsoft's own resources and reputable practice question providers.
- Treating the 45-minute timer as comfortable. It is not. With interactive components, you should aim to finish the multiple choice questions in under 30 minutes so that drag-drop and sequence items have breathing room.
- Booking too early. Take the Microsoft Practice Assessment first. Then book.
- Forgetting that AB-730 expects current GA features. Microsoft updates Copilot rapidly. The skills outline says questions cover features in GA at the time the outline was reviewed (27 October 2025) plus widely-used Preview features [2]. If you are studying Copilot from a 2024 video, you are studying the wrong product.
Booking, Exam Day Logistics and Online Proctored Exam Tips (UK)
You book AB-730 from the Microsoft Learn certification page, which redirects to Pearson VUE for scheduling [1]. UK candidates can choose either an online proctored exam (OnVUE) or a physical Pearson VUE test centre.
Booking window: up to 90 days in advance, with a maximum of two Microsoft exams scheduled at any one time [1].
Cancellation: at least 24 hours before the appointment, otherwise the entire fee is forfeited [7].
Be sure to reschedule or cancel exam appointments at least 24 hours before your scheduled exam or your fee will be forfeited." — Microsoft Learn, Reschedule and cancellation policies, 9 February 2024 [7]
Pricing: Microsoft localises prices via the Pearson VUE checkout flow. Confirm the GBP price in your country at booking time, or check our Microsoft AI certification vouchers and discounts for current saving routes.
Online proctored (OnVUE) practical tips for UK candidates
The Microsoft online exams page is the authoritative source [8]. The non-obvious points:
- Run the system test on the same machine and same network you will use on the day. Many candidates fail OnVUE check-in because their work laptop has VPN or endpoint software that blocks the proctoring tool. A personal laptop is recommended.
- A walled room with a closed door is required. The proctor will ask you to do a 360 degree room scan with your phone. Tidy the desk before you start.
- Government-issued photo ID is mandatory. UK candidates: a valid passport or photocard driving licence works. The name on your ID must exactly match the name on your Microsoft Certification profile [8].
- Check-in opens 30 minutes before the appointment and closes 15 minutes after. Plan to be ready 30 minutes early because check-in itself takes about 15 minutes.
- No additional monitors, no notes, no books, no notepads, no other people in the room. The proctor enforces this strictly.
The proctor will instruct you to remove anything from your work area that violates online exam policy." — Microsoft Learn, About online exams with Pearson VUE, 30 June 2025 [8]
For most UK candidates the practical advantages of a Pearson VUE test centre are: a stable internet connection, no room scan stress, and no risk of an unexpected interruption from family or housemates. The disadvantages are travel time and a narrower booking window. If your home environment is not under your control, book a test centre.
Retake policy
Microsoft's retake policy applies to AB-730 [6]:
- 24 hour wait after the first fail
- 14 day wait between attempts 2 to 5
- Maximum of 5 attempts in any 12 month period from the first attempt date
- Each retake costs the full exam fee
Examinotion's view: if you fail, do not rebook within the first week. Take the time to identify the specific subdomain you missed via your score report, then study that subdomain only.
After AB-730: AB-731, AB-900, AB-100 and AI-901 Pathways
AB-730 is one of four AI Business certifications Microsoft launched together at Ignite 2025 [12][13]. Each targets a different role:
| Exam | Certification | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| AB-730 | AI Business Professional | Daily Copilot users |
| AB-731 | AI Transformation Leader | Decision-makers driving AI adoption |
| AB-900 | Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals | IT admins managing Copilot rollouts |
| AB-100 | Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect | Architects of agentic AI solutions |
The natural next exam after AB-730 is AB-731 (AI Transformation Leader). It is a 45 minute Beginner-level exam covering AI fluency, strategic vision, AI adoption leadership, and aligning AI investments with business goals [11]. AB-730 is not a formal prerequisite, but the two exams pair well: AB-730 proves you can use Copilot, AB-731 proves you can lead its adoption.
If you manage IT for a Microsoft 365 tenant, AB-900 is the operational counterpart. If you build agentic solutions, AB-100 is the architect-level credential. We mapped the full landscape in our Microsoft AI certification roadmap.
A separate technical track runs alongside AB-7xx. AI-901 (Azure AI Fundamentals) replaces AI-900 (which retires on 30 June 2026) and covers Azure AI services, Azure OpenAI, and Microsoft Foundry. It is a different audience: Azure-focused builders rather than business users. Our AI-901 exam guide is the deep dive.
Why AB-730 matters for UK careers
Microsoft 365 Copilot adoption is no longer hypothetical. Roughly 70% of Fortune 500 companies use Microsoft 365 Copilot [15], and a 20,000-seat UK Government pilot saved each civil servant 25 minutes a day, the equivalent of nearly two weeks per person per year [16]:
More than 80% said they wouldn't want to give up Copilot." — Microsoft WorkLab, AI Data Drop, 23 June 2025 [16]
Nine of the 12 UK departments in that pilot continued their licences post-trial, and the rollout has expanded to 31,000 seats government-wide [16]. The 2025 Microsoft Work Trend Index reports that 82% of leaders consider 2025 the pivotal year for AI adoption and 81% expect AI agents in operations within 12 to 18 months [17]. AB-730 is the credential that signals you can operate inside that environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How hard is the AB-730 exam?
AB-730 is rated Beginner by Microsoft, but the 45 minute time limit and the heavy weighting of Domain 2 (prompt and agent management at 35 to 40%) make it harder than its label suggests. Most candidates who use Microsoft 365 Copilot daily and study for 25 to 35 focused hours pass on the first attempt.
How long does it take to prepare for AB-730?
Plan for a four-week study schedule if you already use Microsoft 365 Copilot at work, or eight weeks if you are starting from scratch. Two weeks is enough only if you use Copilot every day and have already built at least one agent.
What is the AB-730 pass mark?
The AB-730 pass mark is 700 out of 1000 as a scaled score [2]. Microsoft scales scores so the mark per question varies by question difficulty.
How many questions are on the AB-730 exam?
Microsoft does not publish the exact question count for AB-730. The 45 minute duration and Microsoft's general guidance suggest a streamlined assessment with a mix of single-select, multi-select, and interactive question types [5].
Is AB-730 worth taking in 2026?
For UK professionals using Microsoft 365 Copilot daily, yes. Microsoft 365 Copilot adoption has reached roughly 70% of the Fortune 500 [15], the UK Government runs a 31,000-seat deployment [16], and AB-730 is the only Microsoft credential that targets the everyday Copilot user.
What is the difference between AB-730 and AB-731?
AB-730 (AI Business Professional) is for daily Copilot users. AB-731 (AI Transformation Leader) is for business decision-makers driving AI adoption strategy. AB-731 is not a follow-on certification, it is a parallel track with leadership focus. See our AB-731 vs AB-730 comparison.
What happens if I fail AB-730?
Microsoft applies a 24 hour wait after a first fail and a 14 day wait between subsequent attempts, up to a maximum of five attempts in any 12 month period [6]. Each retake costs the full exam fee. We recommend studying the specific subdomain shown as weak in your score report before rebooking.
Does AB-730 expire?
The AI Business Professional certification requires annual renewal. The renewal is free, unproctored, and open-book on Microsoft Learn, and the renewal window opens six months before expiry [10]. Pass it once and you can keep the credential current with about an hour's effort each year.
Can I take AB-730 in British English?
The exam is delivered in English only as of April 2026 [1]. Microsoft has not announced a Welsh or other UK regional language localisation.
Is Microsoft Learn open during the AB-730 exam?
Microsoft confirms Learn access for role-based associate and expert exams. AB-730's 45-minute beginner format may not include this access. Do not plan to use Microsoft Learn during the exam, study so you do not need it.
Ready to start?
If you have already used Microsoft 365 Copilot for a few months and the four-week plan looks realistic, your next step is to take the free Microsoft Practice Assessment and identify your weakest domain.
If you want a curated practice set built specifically for AB-730 with explanations grounded in the official skills outline, explore Examinotion's AB-730 exam prep course.
Pass on the first attempt, and AB-730 sits on your CV as proof that you can apply Microsoft 365 Copilot to real work, not just talk about it.
