TL;DR - Quick Summary

Target Audience

Microsoft 365 administrators who run tenants, identity, security and compliance, and now Microsoft 365 Copilot and agents: MS-102 candidates and holders, AB-900 holders stepping up, and admins handed a Copilot rollout.

Exam Format

About 100 minutes (not yet published by Microsoft), English only, passing score 700 out of 1000, £106 excluding tax in the UK. Currently in beta.

Key Focus Areas

Microsoft Entra identity and Conditional Access, Defender for Office 365, Microsoft Purview, Microsoft 365 Copilot settings, agents in the agent registry and Microsoft Agent 365, and AI cost and usage monitoring.

Governance Heavy, AI Wide

Governing and securing tenants and workloads is 40 to 45 percent of the exam. Count the Copilot skills in the other domains and about 30 of the 58 skills are about AI services.

MS-102 retires on 30 November 2026: where AB-650 fits

AB-650 arrives alongside a certification retirement, so it is worth being precise about what it is and what it is not:

  • MS-102 retires on 30 November 2026. Microsoft retires the MS-102 exam and the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert certification on that date. After it, the certification can no longer be earned or renewed.
  • A certification you already hold is not cancelled. It stays valid until its own expiry date. If your six-month renewal window opens before 30 November, you can still renew until then: check the date in your Microsoft Learn profile.
  • AB-650 is Microsoft’s recommended path forward. Microsoft’s June 2026 credentials roundup names it as the recommended new certification for MS-102 holders and candidates.
  • It is an Associate certification, not an Expert one. That makes it the current Microsoft 365 admin credential rather than a like-for-like renewal of the Expert title, and it has no prerequisite.
  • About half of AB-650 is familiar MS-102 ground. Identity and access in Microsoft Entra, Defender for Office 365 and Microsoft Purview sit in the 40-45% governance domain. The new 35-40% domain covers Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents and Microsoft Agent 365.
  • It is still in beta. Our practice set is built to the beta outline, and you get the updated set free within 14 days if Microsoft changes it at GA.

What is the Microsoft AB-650 Exam?

The Microsoft AB-650 exam, officially titled Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services, leads to the Microsoft 365 Certified: Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate certification (Microsoft's announcements also use the shorter Microsoft 365 Certified: AI Services Administrator Associate). Microsoft describes the candidate as someone who configures, manages, secures and governs Microsoft 365 tenants, workloads and AI services, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents and connected AI capabilities, and who works with architects and other administrators across workloads, identity, security, compliance, endpoints and applications.

It is an Associate-level, role-based exam with no prerequisite. It is delivered in English only, the passing score is 700 out of 1000, and in the UK it costs £106 excluding tax. Microsoft has not yet published its length; 100 minutes is Microsoft's standard for associate exams without labs. The exam is in beta: Microsoft scores beta exams only once the exam goes live, with final results about 10 days later, and it may revise the skills outline at general availability. Like other associate certifications it expires annually, and you renew it by passing a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

Who Should Take the AB-650 Exam?

MS-102 Candidates and Holders

Administrators working towards or holding the Microsoft 365 Administrator Expert credential, which cannot be earned or renewed after 30 November 2026.

AB-900 Holders Stepping Up

The same Microsoft 365 Copilot and agent administration ground as AB-900, at associate depth: configuring and troubleshooting rather than recognising.

Admins Running a Copilot Rollout

Administrators whose organisation is adopting Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Agent 365 or Microsoft Copilot Studio and needs licences, settings, access and spend under control.

Identity, Security and Compliance Admins

People who run Microsoft Entra, Defender for Office 365 and Microsoft Purview day to day. Governance and security is the largest domain on the exam.

Experience Microsoft Expects You to Have

AB-650 has no prerequisite, but Microsoft writes it for working administrators and lists this experience in its skills outline:

  • Experience with Microsoft 365 workloads
  • Experience with Microsoft Entra ID
  • An understanding of Microsoft Defender XDR capabilities
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Graph PowerShell

Exam objectives breakdown

AB-650 covers three domains, ten skill groups and 58 skills. The domain and group names are Microsoft's; the skills follow Microsoft's wording in British spelling. Governing and securing tenants and workloads carries the most weight.

Built to Microsoft's beta outline. If it changes at GA, you get the updated set free within 14 days.

Microsoft’s outline names the Copilot Control System. Microsoft’s own AB-650 training notes that the framework is now titled Copilot controls, so expect both names.

Microsoft notes that the bullets under each skill illustrate how it is assessed and that related topics may also appear, and that most questions cover generally available features, with Preview features possible where they are commonly used.

From MS-102 to AB-650: What Carries Over

If you prepared for MS-102, about half of AB-650 will feel familiar. Comparing Microsoft's two published outlines, 32 of MS-102's 54 skills carry over in some form, one is reshaped and 21 are dropped, while 31 of AB-650's 58 skills are new, 24 of them in the AI services domain.

Carries over from MS-102

  • Domains, organisational settings, Service health, network connectivity insights and Microsoft 365 Backup
  • Users, contacts, groups, licences including group-based licensing, roles, PIM, administrative units and bulk work in Microsoft Graph PowerShell
  • Authentication methods, SSPR, Password Protection, sign-in troubleshooting, and Conditional Access with ID Protection and MFA
  • Defender for Office 365 threat policies, alerts, investigation and attack simulation training
  • Sensitive information types, sensitivity labels, retention and DLP, now worded as identifying requirements rather than implementing

Dropped from the outline

  • Identity synchronisation: IdFix, Microsoft Entra Connect Sync, Microsoft Entra Cloud Sync and Microsoft Entra Connect Health
  • Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps
  • Defender XDR incidents and advanced hunting, Secure Score and Exposure Management, and Defender Threat Intelligence
  • Creating a tenant, software updates from the admin centre, and Content explorer and Activity explorer

New in AB-650

  • Branding, licences for AI services, teams and channels, Copilot in Teams meetings, SharePoint sites, and SharePoint and OneDrive for Copilot
  • Data Security Posture Management, and DLP alerts for AI services, in Microsoft Purview
  • The whole AI services domain: Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents, Microsoft Entra Agent ID, the agent registry, Microsoft Agent 365, and AI cost and usage monitoring

MS-102 led to an Expert certification that needed an associate certification first, and was offered in seven languages. AB-650 leads to an Associate certification with no prerequisite, and is offered in English only.

30-day roadmap

A 30-Day Study Plan for AB-650

Thirty days split by Microsoft's domain weights: six for tenants and workloads, twelve for governance and security, nine for AI services, then three days of full-length practice tests.

Days 1-6

Domain 1 • 20-25%

Tenant and workloads

Work through a trial tenant

Days 1-3

Branding, domains and organisational settings, then licences: group-based licensing, pay-as-you-go, and licences for Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Agent 365 and Microsoft Copilot Studio. Finish with Microsoft 365 Backup, network connectivity insights and Service health notifications.

Days 4-6

Shared mailboxes, teams and channels, the Copilot setting in Teams meeting policies, SharePoint site permissions, and the controls that keep sites out of Copilot: Restricted Content Discovery and Restricted Access Control.

Days 7-12

Domain 2 • 40-45%

Identity and access

Microsoft Entra

Days 7-9

Users, guests and external access, groups, roles and Privileged Identity Management, administrative units and contacts, then one bulk change in Microsoft Graph PowerShell.

Days 10-12

Authentication methods, Password Protection and SSPR, then Conditional Access with ID Protection and MFA. Practise resolving failed sign-ins from the sign-in logs and the What If tool.

Days 13-18

Domain 2 • 40-45%

Threats and data

Defender for Office 365 and Microsoft Purview

Days 13-15

Preset and custom threat policies and which one wins, the alert queue, Threat Explorer, and an attack simulation with a training campaign.

Days 16-18

Which DLP, sensitivity label or retention control a requirement needs, DLP alerts for Microsoft 365 and AI services, and Data Security Posture Management for AI activity.

Days 19-25

Domain 3 • 35-40%

Copilot and agents

The new ground

Days 19-22

Copilot readiness and oversharing, web search, Copilot Search, the tenant Copilot settings, Prompt Lab, Copilot Cowork access, third-party AI providers and Copilot connectors.

Days 23-25

Agent identities and sponsors in Microsoft Entra Agent ID, agent access, owners and settings, publishing, blocking and uploading agents in the agent registry, and tools in Microsoft Agent 365.

Days 26-30

Domain 3 + Review

Govern, monitor, rehearse

Then full practice tests

Days 26-27

Monitoring agent activity, protecting sensitive data and finding compliance gaps with Microsoft Agent 365, then AI costs, Copilot usage reports and the Copilot Control System.

Days 28-30

Full-length practice tests in Timed mode, targeted review of your weakest sub-groups, and a final pass through Microsoft’s skills outline bullet by bullet.

Why twelve days on Domain 2? Governing and securing tenants and workloads is 40 to 45 percent of the exam, the largest domain, and it is where most MS-102 knowledge carries over. If you prepared for MS-102, move faster through it and spend the time saved on Domain 3, the AI services ground that MS-102 never covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AB-650 exam?
AB-650, Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services, leads to the Microsoft 365 Certified: Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate certification. It is an Associate-level exam for administrators who configure, manage, secure and govern Microsoft 365 tenants, workloads and AI services, including Microsoft 365 Copilot and agents. It has three domains: configuring and managing tenants and workloads (20-25%), governing and securing them (40-45%), and managing and securing AI services (35-40%). It is delivered in English only and the passing score is 700 out of 1000. It is currently in beta, and Microsoft may revise the skills outline when the exam reaches general availability.
Is AB-650 replacing MS-102?
Yes. MS-102 and the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert certification retire on 30 November 2026, and Microsoft recommends AB-650, Microsoft 365 Certified: Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate, as the path forward. AB-650 is an Associate-level certification. An Administrator Expert certification you already hold stays valid until its expiry date, but it cannot be renewed after 30 November 2026.
Will the practice tests change when AB-650 leaves beta?
They might. Microsoft can change a beta outline when the exam reaches general availability (GA). We compare our questions with the final outline as soon as Microsoft publishes it and update any that need it within 14 days of GA. If you have bought AB-650, the updated set is free.
How long is the AB-650 exam?
Microsoft has not published the length of AB-650 yet. Its standard for associate exams without labs is 100 minutes, so our Timed mode uses 100 minutes. Microsoft does not publish the number of questions either; it says most of its exams contain between 40 and 60. We will confirm the length when Microsoft publishes it.
How much does the AB-650 exam cost?
In the UK, Microsoft charges £106, excluding tax, to sit AB-650 (checked 21 October 2026). You pay this to Microsoft when you book the exam. It is separate from the price of our practice tests.
Are there prerequisites for AB-650?
No. Microsoft lists no prerequisite exam or certification for AB-650. It does expect experience with Microsoft 365 workloads and Microsoft Entra ID, an understanding of Microsoft Defender XDR capabilities, and familiarity with Microsoft Graph PowerShell. MS-102’s Expert certification needed an associate certification first; AB-650 does not.
What is the passing score for AB-650?
The passing score is 700 out of 1000. It is a scaled score rather than a straight 70 percent, so aim to score comfortably above it on full-length practice tests before you book. Beta exams are not scored straight away: Microsoft rescores them when the exam goes live and releases final results about 10 days later.
Is there an official Microsoft practice assessment for AB-650?
Not yet. Microsoft’s AB-650 pages say the practice assessment is not currently available, and that practice assessments are usually available within 8 weeks of an exam leaving beta and becoming generally available. Until then, Microsoft’s free AB-650 training on Microsoft Learn, hands-on time in a trial tenant and full-length practice tests are the strongest preparation.
Can I use Microsoft Learn during the AB-650 exam?
Microsoft’s exam policy allows access to Microsoft Learn during associate and expert exams, and AB-650 is an associate exam, so the policy covers it by category. The AB-650 pages do not repeat that in AB-650-specific wording, so confirm it when you book rather than assume it. Treat it as a quick lookup for one detail, never as a substitute for preparation.
How much of MS-102 carries over to AB-650?
About half. Comparing Microsoft’s two outlines, 32 of MS-102’s 54 skills carry over in some form and 21 are dropped, including identity synchronisation, Defender for Endpoint, Defender for Cloud Apps and most of Defender XDR. Of AB-650’s 58 skills, 31 are new, 24 of them in the AI services domain on Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents and Microsoft Agent 365.
I have AB-900. What does AB-650 add?
AB-900 is a Fundamentals exam. AB-650 is the Associate exam on much of the same Microsoft 365 Copilot and agent administration ground, plus Microsoft Entra, Defender for Office 365 and Microsoft Purview administration at implementation depth, so expect to configure and troubleshoot rather than recognise. Microsoft does not list AB-900 as a prerequisite for AB-650.
How long should I study for AB-650?
If you already work in the Microsoft 365 admin centre and Microsoft Entra every week, 30 days of steady study is a realistic target, and the plan on this page follows Microsoft’s domain weights. Coming from MS-102, you can move faster through the governance domain and spend the time saved on the AI services domain, which is new ground.
