Microsoft Ignite 2025 announcements mapped to 2026 AI certification skill outlines

Last updated: 27 April 2026

TL;DR

Microsoft Ignite 2025, held 17 to 21 November 2025, centred on enterprise AI agents at scale. The Microsoft Foundry rebrand, Agent 365, Entra Agent ID and a wave of Copilot Studio agentic features reset the testable skills for AB-730, AB-731, AB-100, AB-900 and AI-901, with Microsoft Learn study guides updated within ten weeks.

Why this matters if you are preparing for a Microsoft AI exam in 2026

If you booked an AB-730, AB-731, AB-100 or AB-900 exam date based on study guides that were current in October 2025, your preparation is now out of sync with what the exam will test. Microsoft refreshed the study guides for all four AB-series certifications between 6 January 2026 and 27 January 2026, and AI-901 was refreshed again as recently as 23 April 2026 [1].

Industry-news content can date quickly, but skill-outline shifts of this magnitude are unusually durable. Microsoft Foundry, Microsoft 365 Copilot agents, the Researcher and Analyst agents and Microsoft Entra Agent ID are now first-class testable concepts, not nice-to-knows. This article walks through the Ignite 2025 announcements that mattered for certification candidates, then maps them to the live April 2026 study guides for each of Examinotion's launch exams.

Microsoft Ignite 2025 in three sentences

Ignite 2025 ran from 17 to 21 November 2025 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, with main keynote sessions on 18, 19 and 20 November. Microsoft positioned the event around the "Frontier Firm" framing, drawing on its 2025 Work Trend Index that found 81 percent of leaders expected agents to be "moderately or extensively integrated" into their company, and 46 percent of leaders said their organisations were already "fully automating workflows with AI agents" in areas such as customer service, marketing and product development [2]. The Book of News, published on 18 November 2025, is the canonical primary-source compendium of every announcement and is the document to bookmark before any cert refresh [3].

The headline AI announcements that touched the certifications

There were seven announcement clusters at Ignite 2025 that propagated into the AI exam skills outlines.

1. Microsoft Foundry rebrand and GA milestones

Azure AI Foundry was renamed Microsoft Foundry and consolidated as the enterprise platform for building, deploying and managing AI agents [4]. Three significant general-availability milestones landed at or near the event.

  • Model Router went GA, delivering "50 percent lower latency while improving quality by up to 15 percent" by routing each request to the most appropriate model [4].
  • Foundry Observability went GA, including evaluations, OpenTelemetry-based tracing, continuous red-teaming and Azure Monitor integration [4].
  • Logic Apps agent loop went GA for goal-driven business processes that need no custom code [4].

A second wave of capabilities entered public preview: Hosted Agents (deploy without containers), Multi-agent Workflows, Foundry IQ for enterprise grounding, the Foundry Control Plane for governance across frameworks, the open-source Microsoft Agent Framework SDK, Built-in Memory and Foundry Tools (a hub of more than 1,000 curated connectors with MCP, A2A and OpenAPI support) [5]. Anthropic's Claude Haiku 4.5, Sonnet 4.5 and Opus 4.1 also became available in Microsoft Foundry alongside GPT-5.1 and Codex models, making Azure "the only cloud with both Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's GPT models" [6].

2. Foundry Agent Service: hosted agents and one-click Microsoft 365 publishing

Foundry Agent Service had reached GA at Microsoft Build earlier in 2025, but Ignite added a significant capability set across three pillars [5]. "Open by Design" introduced Claude model support, the Microsoft Agent Framework SDK and Hosted Agents in preview. "Connected Intelligence" added Built-in Memory, Foundry Tools, Foundry IQ knowledge grounding and Multi-agent Workflows with a visual designer. "Enterprise Trust" introduced One-Click Microsoft 365 Publishing, the Foundry Control Plane and the now-GA Observability stack.

Microsoft cited two scaled deployments at the event: BMW reported a 12x acceleration in test-fleet data analysis using Foundry agents, and Commerzbank's "Ava" agent now handled more than 30,000 monthly customer conversations with 75 percent autonomous resolution [5].

3. Microsoft Agent 365: the unified agent control plane

Charles Lamanna, Microsoft's Executive Vice President for Business Applications and Agents, announced Microsoft Agent 365 as the unified control plane for managing, securing and governing every AI agent in an enterprise, regardless of which platform built it [7]. Lamanna's framing was direct: organisations should "manage agents the way you manage people, using the same infrastructure, apps, and protections that power your business today" and Agent 365 represented "the next evolution of the existing systems that already run your enterprise" [7].

Agent 365 covers five capability areas: a Registry powered by Microsoft Entra, Access Control with unique agent IDs, a Visualisation dashboard with role-based reporting, Interoperability with Copilot Studio and Foundry, and Security via Microsoft Defender and Purview. The Agent Dashboard moved from private preview in December 2025 to public preview in January 2026 and reached GA in February 2026 [8].

4. Microsoft Entra Agent ID: identity for AI agents

Microsoft Entra Agent ID extended Zero Trust to autonomous systems, giving each agent a first-class identity with the same lifecycle, conditional-access and audit properties as a human identity [9]. Microsoft published more than 50 new documentation articles, three new RBAC roles (Agent ID Administrator, Agent ID Developer, Agent Registry Administrator), OAuth flows tailored to autonomous and interactive agent scenarios, sign-in and audit logs for agents and a "risky agents" concept that extends Identity Protection to detect compromised or anomalous agent behaviour [9].

Entra Agent ID became generally available at Ignite, and it is the documentary evidence of how thoroughly Microsoft now treats agents as governed enterprise actors rather than productivity widgets.

5. Copilot Studio: agentic capabilities, MCP and Computer Use

Copilot Studio received its largest update in 12 months [10]. The general-availability set added GPT-5 Chat in EU and US regions, the GPT-5.2 series, "Copy to Copilot Studio" (which migrates agents from Microsoft 365 Copilot to full Copilot Studio without rebuilding), People as a knowledge source, document generation across Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and an upgraded SharePoint grounding architecture with metadata filtering.

The preview set is what cert candidates need to pay attention to. Model Context Protocol (MCP) support lets agents in Microsoft Teams collaborate with third-party apps including GitHub, Asana and Jira; Microsoft characterised MCP as providing "deep integration with more than 1,400 systems" [10]. Agent Evaluations introduced an automated testing framework that scores agents against predefined scenarios. Computer Use in Copilot Studio, powered by Windows 365, lets agents automate tasks via hosted browsers and Cloud PC pools. Human-in-the-Loop pauses agents for structured approval through Outlook forms before they proceed.

6. Microsoft 365 Copilot: Work IQ, Researcher and Analyst, Agent Mode

Work IQ became generally available as the intelligence layer beneath Microsoft 365 Copilot, blending a user's emails, files, meetings and chats into a personal context that custom agents can reuse [11]. The Researcher agent (deep research across web and work data) and the Analyst agent (data analysis with Python execution) are now explicitly named in the audience profile of multiple study guides, confirming they are testable features rather than marketing fluff. Agent Mode moved to GA in Word and Excel and reached early access in PowerPoint via the Frontier programme. Voice in Microsoft 365 Copilot went GA in December 2025, and Microsoft 365 Copilot Business launched at $21 per user per month for organisations under 300 users [3].

If you are preparing for AB-730 or AB-900, treat Researcher and Analyst as core skills, not optional reading.

7. Agentic roadmap: SDK, A2A, MCP and Purview DLP

Microsoft made it explicit at Ignite that agents are governed objects with identities, permissions and observability, not free-floating bots. The Microsoft Agent Framework SDK entered public preview as an open-source unification of Semantic Kernel and AutoGen with durable execution and Purview integration [12]. The Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol joined MCP as the open inter-agent communication layer Microsoft now lists in its skills outlines [13]. Purview DLP for Copilot prompts entered public preview in November 2025 and was scheduled for GA in Q1 2026, blocking agent responses that would expose sensitive data [8].

Taken together, these are not seven unrelated announcements. They are one coherent thesis: agents are the new workload, and the platform must stand up identity, governance, observability and orchestration before customers can trust it at scale.

How Ignite 2025 reshaped each AI certification

Microsoft refreshed the live study guides on a tight schedule. The pattern is consistent: announcement on 18 November 2025, study guide updated between six and ten weeks later. The table below summarises the most material changes.

Exam Study guide last updated What changed because of Ignite 2025
AB-730 27 January 2026 Researcher and Analyst named in audience profile, full sub-section on creating and managing Microsoft 365 Copilot agents, Agent Store, Copilot Pages and Copilot memory added as testable bullets [14]
AB-731 27 January 2026 First study guide written post-Ignite. Foundry Tools, Microsoft Foundry, Researcher and Analyst, and Copilot licence types (pay-as-you-go, monthly, included) all named explicitly [15]
AB-900 27 January 2026 Title changed to include "and Agent Administration", DSPM for AI added, agent lifecycle management, agent approval, and Copilot Analytics now testable [16]
AB-100 6 January 2026 First study guide written post-Ignite. Model Router, MCP, A2A, Computer Use, Foundry Control Plane, multi-agent orchestration and Entra Agent ID are explicit testable skills [17]
AI-901 23 April 2026 Skill weighting shifted to 55-60 percent on "Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry". Foundry portal, Foundry SDK and Foundry Tools replace older Azure AI Studio framing [1]

AB-730: from Copilot user to Copilot agent author

The AB-730 AI Business Professional study guide retains its three-domain structure: generative AI fundamentals (25 to 30 percent), managing prompts and conversations (35 to 40 percent), and drafting and analysing business content (25 to 30 percent). What shifted is the agent-authoring weight inside the middle domain. Candidates are now expected to "understand the difference between a chat experience and an agent experience", "understand the use case for creating your own agent" and "create and manage Microsoft 365 Copilot agents", including the Agent Store, knowledge configuration, agent settings and sharing controls [14].

The audience profile names Researcher and Analyst as required experience, so a candidate who has only used Copilot in chat is missing the most heavily-tested category of practical knowledge.

For Examinotion's AB-730 study plan, the practical implication is simple. Spend at least one of your 30 days with the Microsoft 365 Copilot Agent Builder. Watch what happens when you add SharePoint or Dataverse as a knowledge source, change instructions, change capabilities and share. The exam will probe whether you have done this in practice.

AB-731: a new exam written through the Ignite lens

The AB-731 AI Transformation Leader study guide was first published in January 2026, so its bullets are fluent in Ignite 2025 language from the outset. "Identify benefits and capabilities of Foundry Tools" and "Identify the benefits of Microsoft Foundry and Foundry Tools, including scalability and security" are explicit testable items [15]. "Identify when to use Researcher or Analyst in Copilot" is another. "Establish governance principles for AI use" and "Establish an AI council" reflect the governance-first framing Microsoft used throughout Ignite for Agent 365 and Entra Agent ID.

Importantly for UK leaders evaluating Copilot rollouts, the licence-types section now distinguishes pay-as-you-go billing, monthly per-user pricing and included-with-Microsoft-365 entitlements [15]. That granularity tracks the Microsoft 365 Copilot Business launch at $21 per user per month for organisations under 300 users [3]. If your AB-731 preparation deck still treats Copilot as a single SKU, refresh it.

AB-900: from Copilot administration to agent administration

The AB-900 Microsoft 365 Copilot Fundamentals certification was renamed at the January 2026 refresh to include "and Agent Administration" in its full title [16]. That is not cosmetic. The "Perform basic administrative tasks for Copilot and agents" domain (25 to 30 percent) now lists Researcher use cases, Analyst use cases, custom agent use cases, agent lifecycle management, Copilot Analytics, pay-as-you-go billing, agent approval processes and usage monitoring through the Microsoft 365 admin centre and the Power Platform admin centre.

"Discover and manage AI activity by using DSPM for AI" was added in the data protection and governance domain (35 to 40 percent), reflecting the Purview AI Observability features that entered public preview in December 2025 [8]. If you sat AB-900 against the October 2025 outline, the agent-administration content is the largest delta. Examinotion's AB-900 exam guide covers the refreshed structure end to end.

AB-100: an exam built around the Ignite agentic stack

The AB-100 Agentic AI Architect certification is the clearest case where Ignite 2025 announcements became testable skills. The study guide, dated 6 January 2026, reads almost as a glossary of the November 2025 Book of News [17]:

  • "Design a multi-agent solution by using platforms such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, and Microsoft Foundry" maps to Multi-agent Workflows in Foundry Agent Service.
  • "Implement a model router to intelligently route requests to the most suitable model" maps to Model Router GA.
  • "Design agent extensibility with Model Context Protocol in Copilot Studio" maps to MCP support in Copilot Studio.
  • "Design agents to automate tasks in apps and websites by using Computer Use in Copilot Studio" maps to Computer Use preview.
  • "Expertise in working with open standards and protocols, including Agent2Agent (A2A) and Model Context Protocol (MCP)" maps to Microsoft's positioning of A2A and MCP as the inter-agent layer.
  • "Design the ALM process for Microsoft Foundry agents" maps to the Foundry Control Plane.
  • "Design security for agents" and "Design governance for agents" map to Entra Agent ID and Agent 365.

AB-100 is also annual-renewal, so candidates who passed it earlier in 2026 will need to refresh against any further changes Microsoft makes between now and their renewal window. Examinotion's AB-100 exam guide tracks these updates.

AI-901: the strongest evidence yet

The AI-901 Azure AI Engineer Associate study guide was updated on 23 April 2026, four days before this article's research cut-off. It is the single clearest data point in the Microsoft Learn corpus for how Ignite reshaped certification skills [1].

The skills at a glance now read: "Identify AI concepts and responsibilities (40-45 percent)" and "Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry (55-60 percent)". The implementation domain is no longer a generic "Azure AI services" survey. Every sub-skill now references the Foundry portal, the Foundry SDK or Foundry Tools by name. "Create and test a single-agent solution in the Foundry portal", "Create a lightweight client application for an agent" and "Build a lightweight application by using Azure Speech in Foundry Tools" are all explicit. If you trained for AI-900, you trained for a different exam. Examinotion's AI-900 vs AI-901 comparison covers what shifted in the transition.

What candidates should actually do differently in 2026

Three changes to your preparation plan are warranted given the evidence above.

Update your study guide bookmark and check the timestamp before each session. The Microsoft Learn study guide pages display an "Updated" date at the top. Treat anything older than three months as potentially out of date for 2026 AI exams. Microsoft has been refreshing these pages aggressively, and AI-901 has already received two refreshes since GA.

Stop preparing exclusively from videos that pre-date Ignite 2025. Pre-November 2025 video courses cover Azure AI Foundry rather than Microsoft Foundry, omit Researcher and Analyst as named agents, and do not cover MCP, A2A, Model Router, Computer Use or Entra Agent ID. They are still useful for the foundational concepts in the first 25 to 40 percent of each exam, but they will leave you exposed in the implementation, governance and agentic-design domains.

Rebuild your hands-on practice around Microsoft Foundry and the Microsoft 365 Copilot Agent Builder. Read-only knowledge of Foundry will not pass AB-100 and is increasingly insufficient for AB-731 and AI-901. Microsoft now expects you to have launched at least one agent, configured a knowledge source, evaluated its outputs and published it. Examinotion's practice tests are written from the post-Ignite skills outline; if you have already prepared with us, your practice has been on the new material from day one.

A UK-specific note on Copilot data residency

For UK-based AB-731 candidates and any leader evaluating a Copilot rollout, one Ignite announcement is worth reading directly. Microsoft confirmed that Microsoft 365 Copilot prompts and responses would be processed within 15 geographic regions by the end of 2025, with the United Kingdom specifically named as one of the four initial regions alongside Australia, India and Japan, and 11 further locations following in 2026 [8]. This addresses the GDPR and UK GDPR data-residency objection that was the biggest single barrier to Copilot adoption in regulated UK industries through 2024 and 2025. AB-731 examiners are likely to test whether candidates know which Copilot data flows now stay in-region and which still cross borders.

A short note on time-sensitivity

If you are reading this article more than nine months after the date at the top of this page, treat its specifics as a snapshot. The product names should remain stable for years, but the GA versus preview status of each capability and the percentage weightings inside the AI exam study guides will keep moving. Always cross-check against the live Microsoft Learn study guide for your exam before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Did Microsoft Ignite 2025 add new exams to the Microsoft AI certification track?

No new AI exam codes launched at Ignite 2025 itself. AB-730, AB-731, AB-900 and AB-100 became generally available in February 2026, and AI-901 superseded AI-900 over the same window. What Ignite did was inject a new generation of agentic, Foundry and governance content into the existing exams' skills outlines.

Will my study materials from October 2025 still pass AB-730 in 2026?

Partially. The fundamentals domain (25 to 30 percent) is largely unchanged. The agent-creation content in the middle domain (35 to 40 percent) is the largest delta and requires hands-on time with the Microsoft 365 Copilot Agent Builder, Agent Store, knowledge sources and sharing controls. Refresh that portion, and learn the Researcher and Analyst agents.

What is Microsoft Foundry and why is it on every AI cert now?

Microsoft Foundry is the rebranded enterprise AI platform that replaces Azure AI Foundry. It now consolidates models, agents, observability and governance into one product surface. Microsoft Learn shifted the AI-901 weighting to 55 to 60 percent on "Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry", and AB-731 and AB-100 name Foundry Tools and the Foundry Control Plane explicitly.

Is Copilot Studio in scope for AB-730 or only for AB-731 and AB-100?

AB-730 covers the agent-authoring experiences accessible directly from Microsoft 365 Copilot, but full Copilot Studio capabilities including MCP, Agent Evaluations and Computer Use are out of scope for AB-730. AB-731 examines Copilot Studio capabilities at a leadership level, while AB-100 expects deep design-level fluency including extensibility patterns and lifecycle management for Foundry agents.

Should I wait for further skill outline changes before booking my exam?

In most cases no. Microsoft Learn publishes updated dates on every study guide, and the cadence appears to be roughly quarterly for active AI exams. Book three to six weeks out and finalise preparation against the most recent study guide. The bigger risk is sitting an exam against an October 2025 outline that no longer reflects what is tested.

Where can I read Microsoft's primary source on Ignite 2025 announcements?

The canonical document is the Microsoft Ignite 2025 Book of News, published on 18 November 2025 at news.microsoft.com [3]. For each headline announcement, the relevant Microsoft Learn, Tech Community, Microsoft 365 Blog or Azure AI Foundry Blog post is listed in the Sources section below. Treat the Book of News as the index and the linked posts as the substance.
