Everything you need to know about Microsoft's AI certification pathway. From foundational knowledge to expert-level architecture credentials, this guide helps you choose the right certification for your career goals.
Microsoft offers five AI certifications spanning Fundamentals to Expert level in 2026:
For IT administrators managing, securing, and governing Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Hands-on Microsoft 365 Copilot usage for business users and knowledge workers.
Strategic AI adoption for managers and executives leading digital transformation.
Enterprise-scale agentic AI architecture using Microsoft Foundry, Copilot Studio, and multi-agent systems.
Core AI concepts, Azure AI services, and generative AI. Replaces the retiring AI-900.
Artificial intelligence has transformed from an emerging technology into a business imperative. Microsoft, as the leader in enterprise AI through Azure OpenAI Service and Microsoft 365 Copilot, has developed a comprehensive certification programme to validate AI competencies across all professional levels.
The Microsoft AI certification landscape addresses a critical market need: whilst 79% of UK organisations are actively adopting AI technologies, only 12% of employees feel adequately trained to use these tools effectively.

The timing for AI certification has never been more critical. Microsoft 365 Copilot reached general availability in November 2023, and adoption has accelerated dramatically throughout 2024 and 2025. Organisations are actively seeking certified professionals who can maximise their AI investments.
Compare all four Microsoft AI certifications side by side to determine which best aligns with your career goals and current skill level.

Microsoft AI certifications reward structured preparation more than raw hours. The exams test how well you apply Copilot, governance, and architectural concepts to specific scenarios, so a study plan built around exam domains and weighted practice will outperform passive reading every time. The plan below works for AB-730, AB-731, AB-900, AI-901, and AB-100; adjust the calendar to match the study time each exam needs.
Open the official exam page on Microsoft Learn and copy the skills measured into a four-week calendar. Allocate days in proportion to each domain's weight: AB-900 candidates, for example, should spend roughly 40 percent of study time on Microsoft Purview and data governance because that domain dominates the exam. Block 45 to 90 minutes per day Monday to Friday, reserve weekends for review and practice exams, and leave the final three days for light revision only. Booking your exam date before week one starts is the single most effective commitment device.
Every Microsoft AI exam has a free, official learning path on Microsoft Learn that maps directly to the skills measured. Complete the modules in the order Microsoft publishes them rather than jumping around: the sequencing builds vocabulary you need for later topics. After each module, write a three-bullet summary in your own words and capture any concept you cannot explain without checking. Those gaps become your highest-value revision targets.
Reading about Copilot, Copilot Studio, or Microsoft Foundry is not the same as using them. Microsoft offers a free Azure account with credits sufficient to provision Azure AI services, deploy a small Azure OpenAI model, and explore Microsoft Foundry. For AB-730 and AB-900, a Microsoft 365 Copilot trial or your employer's tenant gives you the practical exposure the scenario questions assume. Even 20 minutes of clicking through an admin centre teaches you more than an hour of documentation reading.
Microsoft's free Learn module assessments are useful for checking comprehension but are widely reported to under-represent the actual exam difficulty, particularly for AB-900. Supplement them with timed, exam-style practice questions that match the real format, length, and scenario depth. Examinotion offers 5 free practice questions for every Microsoft AI exam, with detailed explanations after each answer so you can diagnose why you got something wrong, not just whether you did.
The Microsoft Learn community, the r/AzureCertification subreddit, and LinkedIn study groups for AB-730 and AB-731 are excellent sources of recent test-taker feedback. Pay particular attention to topics candidates were surprised to see, because Microsoft updates these exams quarterly and surprise topics tend to be recently added skills measured. Posting your own weak areas often produces faster, more practical answers than searching for them.
In the 48 hours before your exam, stop introducing new material. Re-read your own summary notes, run through one final full-length practice exam, and confirm the Pearson VUE OnVUE system check passes on the device you will use. On exam day, clear your desk, have valid photo ID ready, close every unnecessary application, and aim to spend about 60 seconds per question on Beginner exams or 90 seconds on AB-100. Flag anything you are unsure about, move on, and return to flagged questions in the final review window.
