AB-900 vs AB-650: Which Microsoft 365 Admin Certification Should You Take in 2026?

Last updated: November 2026. Fact-checked against the official Microsoft Learn exam pages, study guides and certification pages for AB-900 and AB-650.

TL;DR: Take AB-900 if you are new to Microsoft 365 administration and want a 45-minute Fundamentals credential that never expires. Take AB-650 if you already run a Microsoft 365 tenant and want the Associate-level credential that tests Entra ID, Defender, Purview, Copilot and agent administration in depth. AB-900 is not a prerequisite for AB-650.

AB-900 (Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals) and AB-650 (Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services) are Microsoft's two administrator exams built around Microsoft 365, Copilot and AI agents. They overlap heavily, which is exactly why candidates ask which one to sit, or whether they need both. This guide compares the two exams side by side using Microsoft's own skills outlines, shows where the content overlaps and where AB-650 goes much further, and gives a clear recommendation for four common situations.

AB-900 or AB-650: The Quick Answer

AB-900 and AB-650 sit at different levels of the same administrator path: AB-900 is a Fundamentals exam that checks you understand Microsoft 365 services, data protection and basic Copilot and agent administration, while AB-650 is an Associate exam that checks you can configure, secure and govern a production tenant and its AI services [1][3]. The right choice depends mainly on how much hands-on Microsoft 365 admin experience you already have.

Your situation Recommended exam Why
New to Microsoft 365 administration (helpdesk, junior IT, career changer) AB-900 first Shorter, beginner level, builds the vocabulary AB-650 assumes
Working Microsoft 365 administrator with Entra ID and Defender experience AB-650 directly AB-650 has no prerequisite exam and tests the job you already do
Admin who was planning to sit MS-102 AB-650 MS-102 retires on 30 November 2026 [6]
Business user who uses Copilot but does not administer it Neither, consider AB-730 AB-730 tests using Copilot and agents, not administering them

If you only remember one thing, remember this: AB-900 is optional on the way to AB-650. The AB-650 certification lists a single required exam, AB-650 itself [3].

AB-900 vs AB-650 Side by Side

AB-900 and AB-650 differ in level, credential, depth, languages and renewal, even though both sit inside the Microsoft 365 Certified family. The table below uses the official Microsoft Learn exam, certification and study guide pages, plus Microsoft's exam duration and exam experience page [1][2][3][4][5][7].

Price Set by country or region Set by country or region

Microsoft prices both exams by country or region rather than publishing one global figure, so check the price shown when you schedule through Pearson VUE [1][5]. The passing score of 700 is a scaled score, not a percentage, which Microsoft explains on its exam scoring page [8]. AB-650's practice assessment is expected later: Microsoft says practice assessments usually arrive within eight weeks of an exam leaving beta and becoming generally available [5]. The open-book rules also differ by level, which Examinotion's guide to using Microsoft Learn during your exam explains in full.

What Each Exam Actually Tests

AB-900 and AB-650 both split their marks across three domains, but the verbs tell you everything: AB-900 asks you to identify, understand and perform basic tasks, while AB-650 asks you to configure, manage, govern and secure [2][4].

AB-900 skills measured

The AB-900 study guide, with skills measured as of 14 October 2026, lists these three domains [2]:

AB-900 domain Weight
Identify the core features and objects of Microsoft 365 services 30-35%
Understand data protection and governance tasks for Microsoft 365 and Copilot 35-40%
Perform basic administrative tasks for Copilot and agents 25-30%

AB-900's admin domain stays at an introductory level. It covers comparing the Copilot monthly licence with pay-as-you-go billing, assigning Copilot licences, monitoring usage and adoption, identifying use cases for Researcher and Analyst, and understanding the approval process for agents [2]. Examinotion's AB-900 Copilot and agent administration guide walks through that domain skill by skill.

AB-650 skills measured

The AB-650 study guide lists three domains that go much deeper into tenant operations and security [4]:

AB-650 domain Weight
Configure and manage Microsoft 365 tenants and workloads 20-25%
Govern and secure Microsoft 365 tenants and workloads 40-45%
Manage and secure AI services in Microsoft 365 35-40%

AB-650's governance domain carries the heaviest weight on either exam. It spans Microsoft Entra roles and Privileged Identity Management, Conditional Access and multifactor authentication, Microsoft Defender for Office 365 threat policies and attack simulations, and Microsoft Purview data loss prevention and Data Security Posture Management [4]. Its AI services domain then tests Copilot data readiness, Copilot Cowork and Copilot connectors, agent identity lifecycle with Microsoft Entra Agent ID, publishing or rejecting agents in the agent registry, and monitoring adoption through the Copilot Control System [4]. Examinotion's AB-650 exam guide covers all three domains in detail.

Where AB-900 and AB-650 Overlap

AB-900 and AB-650 overlap on four topics, and studying any of them for one exam gives you a genuine head start on the other. The difference is depth: AB-900 asks you to recognise the right tool, and AB-650 asks you to configure it and troubleshoot it.

Shared topic How AB-900 tests it How AB-650 tests it
Copilot licensing and billing Compare the monthly licence with pay-as-you-go; assign licences [2] Manage and monitor licences, including group-based licensing, pay-as-you-go and licences for Copilot, Agent 365 and Copilot Studio [4]
Data protection with Microsoft Purview Understand sensitivity labels, DLP and oversharing risks for Copilot [2] Identify DLP, sensitivity label and retention requirements, respond to DLP alerts, and secure AI activity with Data Security Posture Management [4]
Agent approval and monitoring Create an agent, configure user access, understand the approval process, monitor usage and lifecycle [2] Manage agent identities, owners, settings and the agent registry; monitor and secure agents with Agent 365 [4]
Admin centres Recognise the Microsoft 365, Entra, Purview and Power Platform admin centres [2] Work inside those admin centres to configure and secure workloads [4]

A useful rule of thumb: an AB-900 question usually asks which feature or admin centre solves a problem, while an AB-650 question usually asks which setting, role or sequence of steps solves it. The Purview oversharing content is the clearest example. Examinotion's AB-900 data protection and Purview guide is pitched at the AB-900 level, and the same concepts reappear on AB-650 with requirements, alerts and policy detail added.

Where AB-650 Goes Much Further

AB-650 tests four areas that AB-900 barely touches, and these account for most of the gap in difficulty between the two exams.

  • Microsoft Entra ID administration. AB-650 expects you to manage roles with Privileged Identity Management and to implement Conditional Access, ID Protection, multifactor authentication and Password Protection [4]. Conditional Access now extends to agent identities too [9]. AB-900 asks you to understand Conditional Access policies and the role of PIM, not to implement them [2].
  • Microsoft Defender for Office 365. AB-650 tests configuring threat policies, investigating email and collaboration threats, and running attack simulation training campaigns [4]. AB-900 asks you to understand Defender XDR features, not to configure them [2].
  • Microsoft Graph PowerShell. AB-650 lists bulk management with Microsoft Graph PowerShell as a skill [4]. AB-900 is a portal-level exam.
  • Agent 365 and Entra Agent ID. AB-650's AI services domain tests governing agents as identities, discovering Microsoft and third-party agents in the agent registry [10], and evaluating compliance gaps with Agent 365 [4]. AB-900 covers creating an agent, configuring user access, the approval process and agent monitoring, but not agent identities, the agent registry or Agent 365 [2].

Microsoft's AB-650 audience profile describes a candidate with experience across Microsoft 365 workloads and Microsoft Entra ID, an understanding of Defender XDR capabilities, and familiarity with Microsoft Graph PowerShell [5]. That is a working administrator, not a beginner. Examinotion's AB-650 study guide breaks the agent identity and Agent 365 material down skill by skill.

Do You Need AB-900 Before AB-650?

AB-900 is not a prerequisite for AB-650. The Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate certification page lists AB-650 as the only required exam and names no prerequisite certification [3]. You can book AB-650 today without holding any other Microsoft credential.

Sitting AB-900 first still makes sense for some candidates. If terms like sensitivity labels, Conditional Access, billing policies or the agent registry are new to you, AB-900 gives you a structured, lower-stakes way to learn the vocabulary. Because Fundamentals certifications do not expire, you never need to renew AB-900 [11]. If you already administer a tenant day to day, skipping straight to AB-650 saves an exam fee and several weeks of study.

The MS-102 Factor

MS-102 is the exam behind the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert credential, and it retires on 30 November 2026 at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time [6]. That deadline makes the choice between AB-900 and AB-650 more pressing for Microsoft 365 administrators.

AB-650 is the natural next exam for anyone who would have sat MS-102, because it covers tenant configuration, identity, Defender and Purview and adds a full domain on AI services [4]. Microsoft's October 2026 partner announcements state that MS-102 retires on 30 November 2026 and AB-650 launches on 30 October 2026, and that AB-650 replaces MS-102 for the Modern Work solution path in the Solutions Partner programme [13]. Microsoft's exam and certification pages do not describe AB-650 as a like-for-like replacement, and the two lead to different credentials at different levels. After 30 November 2026 you can no longer earn or renew the Administrator Expert credential [14], although a certification you already earned stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript [12]. Examinotion's MS-102 retirement guide explains the renewal deadline and the decision in full.

The right route from AB-900 to AB-650 depends on where you are starting. These four paths cover most candidates.

  1. Career changer or helpdesk analyst. Sit AB-900 first, then spend 6-8 weeks on hands-on tenant work in a Microsoft 365 developer or trial tenant before attempting AB-650.
  2. Microsoft 365 administrator with no Copilot experience. Go straight to AB-650, but give the 35-40% AI services domain extra time because it is new ground for most admins.
  3. Administrator already deploying Copilot and agents. Go straight to AB-650. Your day job already covers most of the AI services domain, so focus revision on Defender for Office 365 configuration and Purview requirements and policy detail.
  4. IT manager or consultant who needs to speak the language. AB-900 alone may be enough. It proves you understand Copilot and agent administration without committing to Associate-level configuration depth.

If you are a business user who works with Copilot rather than administering it, neither exam is the best fit. AB-730 (AI Business Professional) tests how to use Copilot and agents productively; see the AB-730 practice tests.

How Long to Study for Each Exam

Study time for AB-900 and AB-650 varies with experience, and Microsoft does not publish recommended hours, so treat these as planning estimates rather than official figures.

Starting point AB-900 AB-650
No Microsoft 365 admin experience 3-4 weeks 8-12 weeks, ideally after AB-900
Some admin experience, no Copilot 2-3 weeks 6-8 weeks
Experienced admin deploying Copilot 1-2 weeks 4-6 weeks

Microsoft's instructor-led courses reflect the same gap in depth. AB-900T00, Introduction to Microsoft 365 and AI administration, is a one-day beginner course [15], while AB-650T00, Administer Microsoft 365 and AI services, is a three-day intermediate course that Microsoft lists as available from 13 November 2026 [16]. Examinotion's AB-650 30-day study plan breaks AB-650 into weekly blocks mapped to the official domains, and the free AB-900 practice questions show the level AB-900 is pitched at. You can try the question types and exam interface in Microsoft's free exam sandbox before booking [7]. For pacing advice on a 45-minute Fundamentals exam versus a longer Associate exam, see Examinotion's Microsoft exam duration and pacing guide.

Honest Difficulty Assessment

AB-650 is the harder exam by a clear margin. It is an Associate exam with a heavier, more technical outline, and the governance domain alone carries 40-45% of the marks across identity, threat protection and compliance [4]. Candidates who pass AB-900 comfortably should not assume AB-650 will feel similar.

AB-900 is not a walkover either. Examinotion's guide to passing AB-900 explains why its data protection domain catches out candidates who expect a simple Fundamentals exam. Both exams also include questions on Preview features where those features are commonly used, so keep an eye on recent Microsoft 365 admin centre changes [2][4].

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need AB-900 before AB-650?

No, AB-900 is not required before AB-650. The Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate certification lists AB-650 as its only required exam, with no prerequisite certification. AB-900 is still a sensible first step if you are new to Microsoft 365 administration and want to learn the core vocabulary first.

Is AB-650 harder than AB-900?

Yes, AB-650 is harder than AB-900. AB-650 is an Associate-level exam that tests configuring and securing a tenant across Entra ID, Defender, Purview, Copilot and agents. AB-900 is a Fundamentals exam that mostly tests whether you can identify the right feature, admin centre or licensing model for a scenario.

Is AB-650 the replacement for MS-102?

AB-650 is the closest successor for MS-102 candidates, and Microsoft's partner programme treats it as the MS-102 replacement for Modern Work requirements. Its exam pages do not call it a direct replacement: MS-102 leads to an Expert credential, while AB-650 leads to an Associate credential with a full AI services domain.

Does the AB-900 or AB-650 certification expire?

The AB-900 certification does not expire, because Microsoft Fundamentals certifications have no renewal requirement. The AB-650 certification is an Associate credential, so it expires after one year unless you pass Microsoft's free online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn during the renewal window.

Which certification is better for a Copilot administrator role?

AB-650 is the stronger credential for a Copilot administrator role, because 35-40% of the exam tests managing and securing AI services, including Copilot settings, agents and Agent 365. AB-900 is a good entry point that shows you understand Copilot licensing, billing and agent approval at a foundational level.

How much do AB-900 and AB-650 overlap?

AB-900 and AB-650 overlap on Copilot licensing and billing, Microsoft Purview data protection, agent approval and monitoring, and the main admin centres. AB-900 tests these at recognition level, while AB-650 tests hands-on administration, adding Entra ID and Defender for Office 365 depth that AB-900 covers only conceptually, plus Microsoft Graph PowerShell.

Is AB-650 still in beta?

AB-650 ran as a beta exam earlier in 2026, and the English AB-650 exam page no longer carries the beta label as of 30 October 2026, the launch date given in Microsoft's partner announcements. The practice assessment is not yet available, so check the official exam page before booking.

Choose Your Exam and Start Practising
