A whole new functional domain appears, an existing objective is removed outright, and the audience profile itself is flagged as a major change.

If you have AB-730 booked for late October or later, the outline you revised from may no longer be the outline you sit. This article sets out exactly what changes, what stays the same, and how to decide whether to sit before or after the switch.

What is changing in AB-730 on 20 October 2026

Microsoft publishes a change log in every study guide that shows the skill areas before and after an update, with each row marked Major, Minor, New, Removed, or unchanged. The AB-730 change log is unusually busy [1].

Four things stand out:

1. A new fourth domain appears: "Drive business outcomes by using agents", weighted 20-25 percent and marked New.
2. All three existing domains lose weight: each is marked "% of the exam decreased".
3. An objective is removed: "Create and manage Microsoft 365 Copilot agents" has no successor on the post-update side.

One practical warning before you read further. As of 21 September 2026, the "Assessed on this exam" bullet list further down the AB-730 certification page still displayed the old three-domain structure, contradicting the same page's own update notice. The new skills measured at a glance

Here is the post-update structure with the weightings Microsoft publishes [1].

The pre-update domains were "Understand generative AI fundamentals", "Manage prompts and conversations by using AI", and "Draft and analyze business content by using AI" [1].

A detail worth flagging, because other sites will get this wrong: Microsoft's change log does not publish the previous percentage ranges. It marks each older domain only as "% of the exam decreased". Any article quoting precise before-and-after percentages for the three original domains is inventing them. What we can say with confidence is that all three shrank to make room for a domain worth up to a quarter of the exam.

The shape of the exam has shifted meaningfully. Generative AI fundamentals remains the single largest area, but the other three domains are now essentially equal in weight. Agents are no longer a sub-topic tucked inside prompt management. They are a quarter of the paper.

Read that second bullet carefully, because it is the hinge of the whole revision. Candidates are still expected to choose between a prebuilt agent and a custom one, but they are no longer expected to build the custom one. The judgement survives; the build task does not.

Perform business tasks by using Microsoft Copilot Cowork

This group is entirely about one product, and it carries seven skills [1]:

That final sentence is exam-relevant. Cowork operates on an approval model, so a scenario question describing Cowork silently sending an email without confirmation is describing behaviour Microsoft does not document.

Cowork works through skills, which are the discrete capabilities it calls to complete parts of a task. Microsoft documents built-in skills covering Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, Email, Scheduling, Calendar Management, Meetings, Daily Briefing, Enterprise Search, Communications, Deep Research, Adaptive Cards, and App (Frontier). Organisations can also add custom skills, up to 50 per organisation [3]. Work IQ and the reworked audience profile

The audience profile change is marked Major [1], which is Microsoft's strongest non-structural marker. In practice it signals that the assumed starting point for a candidate has moved: AB-730 now assumes you think about delegating work to agents, not just prompting a chat assistant.

Work IQ is the reasoning layer that makes that delegation possible. Microsoft describes it as "a workplace intelligence layer that enables agents to access and reason over organizational data, context, and tools. It continuously builds a semantic understanding across Microsoft 365 and external systems with built-in, permission-aware governance" [4].

Three points matter for a business-focused exam like AB-730:

• Permission-aware governance is built in. Work IQ respects existing Microsoft 365 permissions, so an agent cannot reason over data the user cannot already see.
• It is organised into four capability areas: Chat, Context, Tools, and Workspaces, exposed through A2A, a remote MCP server, and a REST API [4].
• Access is licensing-independent. Microsoft states that "Work IQ API access is independent of Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing and available through usage-based billing" [4].

This is genuinely good news for most candidates. Building custom agents was the most technical requirement in an otherwise business-oriented exam, and it sat awkwardly alongside objectives about drafting documents and running meetings. Removing it sharpens AB-730's identity as a certification for business professionals who deploy and direct AI rather than configure it.

Conversations become chats, and Notebooks arrives

The functional group "Manage conversations in Copilot" becomes "Manage chats in Microsoft 365 Copilot", marked Major [1]. This is not purely cosmetic. The underlying skills have been rewritten around chat objects: finding a previous chat, deleting a chat, and renaming a chat. A new skill also appears, "Organize and share information by using Notebooks" [1].

Terminology drift is a recurring trap on Microsoft AI exams, and this is a textbook case. If your study notes still say "conversation" where Microsoft now says "chat", update them. Distractors in multiple-choice items are frequently built from retired terminology, so recognising the current vocabulary is worth real marks. The AB-730 study guide names the Facilitator agent directly, under the objective on managing meetings and collaboration [1]. Microsoft's training material describes Facilitator as an agent that "works alongside you and your team to help you manage Teams meetings effortlessly by taking notes, getting quick answers, and moderating the conversation" [5].

Two other prebuilt agents appear throughout Microsoft's Copilot training and are likely to feature in scenario questions about selecting the right agent for a workflow [5]:

An honest caveat, because precision matters here: the AB-730 study guide itself names only Facilitator in its own bullet text. Researcher and Analyst are named explicitly in the AB-731 and AB-900 study guides and in Microsoft's prebuilt-agents training module [5][8][9]. They are clearly in scope for the AB-730 objective "Select and apply prebuilt Microsoft 365 Copilot agents", but do not let anyone tell you the AB-730 outline lists them by name. It does not.

Should you sit AB-730 before or after 20 October 2026?

This is the question that matters, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a hedge.

Sit before 20 October if you have already revised the current outline thoroughly, you are scoring consistently well on practice material built for the three-domain version, and you can realistically get a slot booked and sat in the next four weeks. There is no benefit in re-learning a quarter of an exam you were ready to pass.

Sit after 20 October if any of the following apply: you have not started serious revision yet, you are weak on the custom-agent objective and would rather it disappeared, or your work already involves Cowork and prebuilt agents so the new domain plays to your strengths. Preparing once against the current outline beats preparing twice against a moving one.

Two honest notes on the limits of this advice. First, Microsoft does not publish a rule stating which version of an exam you sit based on when you booked, so do not rely on a booking date to lock in the old outline. Plan around the date you actually sit. Second, be realistic about the work involved in the new domain. Eleven new examinable skills across agents and Cowork is not an evening of reading, and AB-730 is not a soft exam even in its current form. A word on precision. Microsoft has not flagged duration, scoring, or the retake policy as changing, but neither has it explicitly confirmed each one as unchanged in the update notice. Treat the 45 minutes and the 700 pass mark as currently published figures rather than as guarantees for the post-update exam, and re-check the certification page after 20 October if timing is critical to your planning.

On price, Microsoft publishes no figure at all on the certification page, stating only that the price is based on where the exam is proctored [2]. Any specific dollar or pound amount you find on aggregator sites is not sourced from Microsoft.

When localised versions update

If you sit AB-730 in a language other than English, you have longer. Microsoft's stated policy, quoted directly from the study guide, is: "Some exams are localized into other languages, and those are updated approximately eight weeks after the English version is updated. If the exam isn't available in your preferred language, you can request an additional 30 minutes to complete the exam" [1].

Applying that eight-week policy to a 20 October English update points to localised versions changing around mid-December 2026. That is arithmetic on Microsoft's published policy, not a date Microsoft has confirmed for AB-730 specifically, so treat it as a planning estimate and confirm on the certification page nearer the time.

How to prepare for the updated objectives

Microsoft Learn already hosts training that maps onto the new domain, even though the instructor-led course page has not yet caught up.

The AB-730T00-A course page was last updated in January 2026, well before the domain change was published [10], so no Microsoft page yet confirms which modules will formally map to the new agents domain. Beyond reading, get hands on. Are other Microsoft AI exams changing too?

Two answers, both checked directly against the study guides on 21 September 2026.

AB-900 has a pending update dated 14 October 2026, six days before AB-730, but it is minor rather than structural. The audience profile is marked "No change", one parent domain is unchanged, and only the objective "Identify the core security features of Microsoft 365 services" is marked Minor [8].
